02 – Flying Log Book World War II

  • This history is chronological so “Flying Log Books” may not be in sequence.

Training began once dad and his fellow Tahitians finished what was said to be a five (5) month pressure course in English a big ask for these young men. As they all went to different courses you have to believe they all passed so hats off to them.

On the top of the left hand page dad had made a note: 35 rue St Didier Amicale de FAFL Paris 16eme.

Followed by a list of “Instructions:

The right hand page is “Certificates of Qualification” (To be filled in as appropriate)

    1. This is to certify that 30766 Mara N has qualified as W/Opt AG with effect from 14 APRIL 1942 Sgd. (Signed by Commander Date 14 APRIL 1942 unit No.1 Signals School
    2. This is to certify that 30766 MARA. N. has qualified as AIR GUNNER with effect from 29 . 5 . 42 Sgd (J. Compton S/hd9) Date 29 . 5 . 42 Unit No.8 AGS EVANTON

At the bottom of the page “Night Vision Test, Cranwell 16/1/42 Result. Average

So as you can see by the dates above this was issued once training was completed.

The address Dad had noted, “35 rue St Didier Amicale de FAFL (Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres) Paris 16eme” was where all the Free French Squadrons who flew with the RAF were based once France was liberated which Dad would have reported to when he went to France post war before returning to Tahiti.
